Discover the possible tax savings that are available to forest landowners.

Timber sale income is a highly specialized area of the federal tax code. Most tax prepares don't confront the sale of timber frequently enough to be aware of the proper federal tax provisions or how to use them for your greatest tax savings.

If reported in the proper manner, your income from timber will receive a lower tax rate than your ordinary income marginal rate and you
will not pay the social security self employment tax. A savings of over 30% is possible on your federal tax bill.

Demand For Products From Private Timberlands Is Growing

In the past, there had been little concern with increasing the productivity of private timberland because the supplies of forest products were very plentiful and timber lands still abundant.

This is no longer the case. Nationally, the timberland base has been shrinking while the demand for timber products is projected to sharply increase.

it's now necessary to increase the productivity of privately owned timberlands. To accomplish this, timber landowners and timber companies must manage their land more effectively.

Timberland Wildlife Habitat Improvement Techniques

Many kinds of wildlife that live in the forest are not found anywhere else. When timber land is harmed or destroyed, these creatures become fewer and disappear.

Timberland management can produce improved wildlife habitat. Proper timberland management can not only give the owner a financial return but it also will benefit wildlife.

Timber management can develop a mixture of habitats on your property, which increases the biodiversity, and help to provide needed habitat.

Crop Tree Release

Crop Tree Release - CTR is not the practice of beautifying a forest. It Is  the killing or removing of selected trees in heavily forested timberlands for the benefit of the remaining desirable crop trees. It prevents over competition for limited resources.

When
properly applied , CTR results in a faster, healthier growing timberland comprising a higher percentage of higher quality trees.

Similar to the principles that are applied to gardening, CTR allows you to guide your forest, leaving it with well-spaced trees that have crowns that which are capable of relatively quickly responding to the increased growing room.

The purpose of CTR is to reduce some of the competition from around  the selected crop trees so that they improve their vigor, remaining competitive in the stand providing for increased
future growth rates.

: Trees released from competition

CTR can be also used to alter species composition within your forest, and to concentrate diameter growth on more desirable, potentially valuable crop trees.

The 2 ideas that are important to remember these concepts are understanding how crop trees help meet timber management objectives and how reducing competition for site resources around crop trees enhances their vigor and development.
